Jennifer Egan was born in Chicago, September 6, 1962. When her parents divorced, she moved to San Francisco with her mother. Jennifer attended the University of Pennsylvania, where she majored in English Literature. After graduation, she continued her education at St. John’s College in Cambridge. Meanwhile, Egan traveled around Europe, which inspired the plots in her novels.
After studying in England, Egan found home in New York. She worked in different places while she published a couple of short stories in literary magazines. In 1995, her first novel was published: The Invisible Circus. Her first novel received great reviews, and was prized for Egan’s extended use of metaphors and attention to detail. Her second novel was titled Look at Me, and featured the story of a model who undergoes reconstructive surgery, returns to help a detective search for her former Middle Eastern boyfriend, who had planned to attack Manhattan. This novel was published the same week the World Center was attacked, resulting in controversy.
