Chapter 5 is narrated by Jocelynne, herself and Rhea go and visit Lou who is on his deathbed. Rhea and Jocelynne are now 43, Jocelynne moved in with her mother and is now trying to earn her degree from UCLA. Meanwhile, Rhea is married and lives with her three children. Jocelynne keeps remembering the days she spent in Lou’s house and wonders how he got so old. He asks Lou about his son Rolph, Jocelynne pictures herself drowning Lou. She opens her eyes, and Lou asks her and Rhea to stand on either side of him like old times.
Analysis
Chapter 5 shows the effects time had on Rhea,Jocelynne and Lou. They have all gone in completely different paths. Lou is now dying alone, his favorite son is dead too, and he is alone in his huge house. Rhea is now married, and has a family. Jocelynne claims that Rhea always knew what she was doing, that she was just pretending to pretend. Meanwhile, she feels like she has nothing, She has been sober for over a year now, yet feels like she hasn’t accomplished anything. The different paths the characters have taken, show the good, and bad side of time. Rhea, got the good end of the deal, Lou the bad, and Jocelynne had remained neutral.
