Chapter 3 is narrated from Rhea’s point of view, she is a friend of Bennie’s. The pack is at Alice’s house, when Scotty asked to see her sisters. Claiming that they must be blonde, because all rich people are blonde. To his surprise one of the girls is brunette, and he claims she is a black sheep. The chapter also reveals the love triangle in the group, Rhea loves Bennie, Bennie loves Alice, and Alice loves Scotty. Rhea reveals the inside of the Flaming Dildos, a band they formed. How the band has had a lot of different names, due to the fact that Scotty and Bennie don’t actually talk. Rhea explains that Jocelynne loves Scotty back, but that she is not in love with him, that she is waiting for Lou. The group performs at a punk rock venue, where they get rotten fruit thrown at them, while Jocelynne has intimate relationships with Lou.
Analysis
Chapter 3 reveals the insecurities of the characters, and how naive they are, this is in some aspects. Rhea confesses that the reason she dresses as she does and has green hair, is to distract people from her ugly freckles. The chapter reveals details about all the characters, such as the dead of Scotty’s mother from sleeping pills and how he hasn’t been the same. The characters are beginning to suffer the effects of time. Bringing up the confusion of self identity, a theme of the book. According to this chapter, the fact that they have to pretend to be something they aren’t drives them farther apart from becoming who they actually want to be.
