Goodbye, My Love
The chapter begins with Ted Hollander, Sasha’s uncle, traveling around Naples in an effort to find her. As he searches, he considers his nonexistent desire for his wife, Susan, but eventually he “folded” his desire for her and lost his lust for her. After thinking about his wife, and his sons, he reflects on his love of art and affects it has on his relationships. Eventually Ted’s thought returns to Sasha; he expresses his change in attitude regarding Sasha after her descent from morality. The next day, Ted finds and follows Sasha. He is able to convince her to join him for dinner and they have a good conversation. However, after Sasha leaves he realizes that she had stolen his wallet. He finds her later in an awful apartment complex and they discuss how different her life has become. The chapter then fast forwards twenty years. It shows an older, divorced Ted, and Sasha with a new, happier life.
Analysis:
This chapter brings the reader back to an earlier time in order to reveal a side of Sasha that the reader would otherwise have never known. It also gives an explanation for certain happenings in earlier chapters. One such time, in chapter ten, is the showing of Sasha’s aversion to drugs; this is a reaction to her previous addiction. The reader is also shown how Sasha changes in the future, getting a glimpse of the person she becomes.
