35 year old Sasha recalls a date with Alex, a date gone wrong due to her problem. Sasha recalls that night at the Lassimo Hotel , while she was fixing her eye shadow in the bathroom, she spotted a purse. She could barely see the green leather wallet sticking out. According to Sasha, she needed to show this lady a lesson. Not to leave things around in such way, as it's like asking for it to be stolen. Sasha recalls this as she is in her therapist’s couch, Coz,her therapist, who she questioned was actually a therapist, a famous book writer, or a crazy doctor. As the session continues, Sasha recalls the lame date she was in that night, as they were leaving the hotel, the owner of the wallet followed them out the door, desperately asking if Sasha had seen her wallet. She knew. Sasha eventually offers to help look for the lost wallet, and “finds it”. Alex and Sasha, take a cab to her apartment, where they spend the night.
Analysis
Sasha never admits to the problem she has, which her therapist says is not for lack of empathy. Sasha only steals things from people, not stores- as they are “cold”. These objects lack the emotional connection Sasha craves. The chapter gives the impression of Sasha feeling trapped, in a place where you don’t know people. Where you can’t truly know them because there is so many sides of them, and there is no where else to go. Sasha is pained, by different things, one of them being her father’s abandonment. The isolation, and routine only add to her desperation, that only seems to decrease when she steals. Yet, the act itself pains her. Another example of being trapped, with no way out.
