The Gold Cure
Bennie Salazar, president of Sow’s Ear Records is having a meeting about representing the Stop/Go band, a sister band who Bennie had signed a three year record deal a couple years back. Back then, the deal seemed like a smart move, but now the sisters were pushing 30, and one of them had a nine year old daughter. At this moment, Bennie recalls a memory from more than twenty years ago, when he kissed Mother Superior. This memory somehow made Bennie feel responsible for the sisters failure, so he agrees to meet with them after he sees his son. Sasha brings Bennie a cup of coffee, to which he adds his “cure” too- gold flakes. These are supposed to stimulate his sexual drive. Bennie drives to Christopher’s school, to pick him up for their weekly visit. They decide to go for coffee, his son asks to have gold flakes in his coffee as well. Later, Bennie and Sasha go back to the sister’s house, while they sing Bennie noticed Sasha in a “different way.”

Bennie Salazar, a main character, is one undergoing the effects of time. He knows his business is not successful, due to inability to keep up with the evolution of the business industry. He is a fan of old school music, that simply does not interest the public as much. Bennie’s marriage collapsed, although we don’t know the reason. Ever since, he has been looking for ways to reconnect with his son, who seems to not have the same intention. Bennie agrees to let his son have some gold flake sin his coffee as he feels his could become their own little secret.Something only they share, a unique connection. This chapter begins to showcase the importance of time in the book, The inescapable effects it has on people, the sisters for example. They were a major hit back in the day, now they were older and had lived, people were just not interested anymore.
